As a huge lonzo fan I'm extremely concerned, because to me it's not just about him recovering - but will he ever be able to play like he used to? will he be able to run the fastbreak at full capacity which is his specialty? will he be able to play intense defense for most of the game? .. I already believed that billy donovan was playing him way too many minutes, but now with this situation I fear he will have to always play on a minutes restriction to avoid the RISK of injury. To be fair, there have been players with huge injuries that we thought would never be the same again - most players we know have gotten big injuries and have recovered. P.S I hate when people phrase injury prone players a certain way, for example a lot of people make it sound like lonzo is at FAULT for being injured so often - if anyone is at fault is either lavar or his coaches for playing him too much.

In year 2 with the Lakers we saw Lonzo miss an extended period to end the season with a bone bruise that would not heal. Now we are seeing a similar situation carry over into the next season which is unfortunate new ground for #2 for the Bulls. Time will tell if at some point these injuries take a toll on his skills and whether Chicago feels they can work him a full load and risk more injury. Not a good situation for the team or Lonzo but if they are healthy there is a ton of upside

Broken bones are the best injuries since they heal pretty quick and don't really hurt later on but tendons, capsules, nerves etc.. those are bad

I broke my femur bone when I just turned 8 yrs old. It was a clean break and I healed over the summer it was 2 months and 1 week of healing and then 3 weeks of walking rehab. I also had sprained my LCL and ACL in the car accident. They said if I was 3 inches shorter I would have got hit in the lower abdomen and would have died as the car was going 50 mph and would have bursted my stomach open. I played football in the 5th grade 2 years after the accident and felt some pain. I decided my sports career was over and continued to work on my legs. Now I'm a sophomore and bout to play basketball again this season then football next season. Lonzo just needs to be patient. I waited 6 years to get back in shape. Yea he don't shave that time but a year off could help

What I learned from sports injuries of my own is that doctors can only make educated guesses when it comes to recovery time lines. There is no pure science on knee repair. No matter how much technology advances. These dudes who play high level sports at young ages bodies seem to break down quicker(not always but often)

  • RJay Mac
    RJay Mac

He needs rest. The issue is, he's had to constantly prove his worth, because most sports analysts have called him a bust, until just recently. So each season, he's had to play hurt. Now that everyone knows he's a good player, he can finally take his time and heal completely. If Im Zo, Im sitting for however long it takes. He's what, 24, soon to be 25? Thats the age of entering your prime. If he gets 100% from all those nagging bruises (his meniscus should be fine, and it should be just the bruising and the rest he needs), he has 10 years left to play at a level we've not seen since high school. Chino Hills Zo (dunking on everyone) will be back...hopefully, this is the route he takes...I say wait it out, and dont rush it, like he's had to do all these years, and show them who you really are when you return. He had a 40 inch vert at one time....🤷🏿‍♂️

    • CM

Yes, of course injured players should let themselves heal, but that's the great thing about NBA contracts - the guaranteed bag means hurt players don't have to rush back. That said, he's missed a ton of games in his first 5 years, he is now considered an injury-prone player and that label means a 'prime' is not a for sure thing. And what if what's wrong with him physically don't heal with rest?

  • AMJ J

Im a huge Lonzo fan, and ball brothers fan. I knew Lonzo had a career ending injury he been hiding his whole career pretty much. A good management team and people around him has made him able to extend his career , and get paid. Foq it tho Im happy he worked the system , and is now set for life. IF he would of been healthy he woulda been great. He cant last a full season with his leg that messed up thats why hes always reluctant and stays on the ground. His fans are like he needs to be more aggressive but hes just tryin to hold up his longevity as long as he can. I think he can only play about 25 games in a season before hes done for good again. He hasnt played a full season , and has never healed right and will never be right ever again.

  • Bara Dur Eye

I been sayin he could’ve been a solid NBA player (Luke ridnour, sefolosha level) but the hype and narrative that he was a generational talent put the man under so much pressure he always gonna underachieve, hell the pressure might’ve even contributed to his injuries 🤷‍♂️

A slight tear in a meniscus doesn’t take that long and at times doesn’t need surgery and only rehab. It has to be the bone bruise that’s holding him back or there was another ligament that was also torn.

    • CM

@Quinn Denver They do not, and they been working on that technology for like 30 years.

    • Quinn Denver
      Quinn Denver

@CM they don’t have synthetic replacements for meniscus in that situation?

    • CM

Or they've had to remove so much meniscus in that knee (remember this is his second surgery on the same knee) that he is now bone on bone in the joint and osteoarthritis has developed. And when that happens it make it almost impossible for the player to play without pain.

    • CM

@magnergames He got a trim, that's what makes this so scary.

    • magnergames

Meniscus heals slower than ligaments and bone. The only quick "recovery" is when they trim it with no repair. Even PRP, if lucky enough to work,, takes awhile.

Injuries are never good, but on one hand Lonzo's game does not rely on athleticism. He is probably one of the least athletic starting point guards in the league. So you would think that when he does come back he should be good to go right where he left off. But on the other hand, it's been 5 years of chronic injuries. If the guy can't avoid getting hurt, he isn't going to have success in the NBA. This year is a big one in the direction his career goes from here. He isn't young anymore. At this point he is what he is. Hopefully that is a great shooter and even better passer. Not a chronically injured below average point guard.

Partial meniscectomy surgeries may not sound that serious but have much longer recovery periods than doctors say. And you never return to 100% with the knee. There is a reason for the existence of the meniscus. Its a a shock absorber and stabiliser. If you are everyday Joe, not an big issue. But if you are a professional athlete in a sport that requires jumping, cutting, pivoting, and twisting, it is a real problem. I had such an operation myself…doctor told me the same 6-8 week to recover. That was totally wrong…took me two years to recover and never had the same level of athletic ability even years after the surgery. Depending on the extend of the debridement, you have less meniscus to handle the same loads -shock absorption, twisting, pivoting-as before, which can create a chronic issue.
